Meet our instructors

Kelly Hazlegrove

Kelly has been in love with nature since she discovered the creek behind her house as a child. After finishing college and graduate school, she moved to the mountains of Virginia to begin her career as a freshwater biologist. In her late 20s she got serious about mountain biking and was determined to develop her technical riding skills. To share her passion for mountain biking she helped found her local mountain bike club, the Greater Lynchburg Off-Road Cyclists (GLOC), and later went on to start a NICA team in her city, the Lynchburg Area Bikers (LaB).

Kelly began her coaching journey in 2014 through the Bike Instructor Certification Program (BICP) and is now a certified Level 3 Advanced Instructor.  She also trains and certifies other instructors as an Instructor Trainer for the BICP. Skills sessions with Kelly are a combination of expert instruction and feedback, with an emphasis on having fun, developing confidence, and learning to be playful on the bike. She enjoys working with everyone from true beginners to advanced riders and teaches everywhere from grassy fields to bike parks. You can find her coaching through her husband’s bike shop, Blackwater Bike Shop, and at regional camps and clinics. You can also wave hello as she and her son ride bikes to and from school.
